Steph Batgirl action figure!

After a chance sighting in my local comic shop I impulse bought the Steph figure.  I decided to review it  a month ago and finally here is the review..

Colour scheme
Very nice. The purple and yellow are vibrant and complement each other well.  The colours look fairly deep and are nicely put on.

Articulation
This is my first figure that moves at the waist.  She also has articulation at the neck (sideways and up/down), elbows, shoulders, wrists and knees (sing along with me now...). her right hand is much looser than her left so I'm a little concerned it will fall off and I'll have a stumpy Batgirl.  I currently have her in an about to kick someone inna fork pose:
Design
It's pretty faithful to the comic.  She has flat boots (hurrah) and her legs and arms are ribbed (not for anyone's pleasure).  Her leg belt does appear to be inserted into her leg rather than sitting on top of it. Steph has many abilites but shapeshifter she ain't, so that much be quite painful for her.  Her hair has good waves and is nicely defined  The Bat ears are rather tall but it avoids looking daft as it is balanced out by the long hair.  The cape is lovley - flexible and swept off to the side.  Her breasts are of a normal teenage woman size.

Accessories
Baaaaaaaaaaataarrrraaaaang!  Yellow batarang!  And a boshing stick.  No I don't know the real name (baton?) so I call it a boshing stick.  It fits in her belt and the batarang sits in her hand.  Joy.
See?  Accessoried upa nd ready to kick someone inna fork.  While smiling. Steph we love you.

She also has this stupid platform to stand on - it's too small and looks daft.  If you put both legs down they don't fit on the platform.  Daft.

All in all though, I really like this figure.  I want to bring it into work and have her on my desk, but I hotdesk so that's not really feasable.  Maybe in the future when I hopefully can swap between just 2 desks.

Wonder Woman bust

So, I'm a member of the AFB message board, where we generally geek out about action figures and suchlike.

One of the posters, sinigang, has recently produced a Wonder Woman bust (based on the Alex Ross Wondy) and I just had to share some pics with y'all.

Isn't that just beautiful?  She's got a personality.  I love how the lighting in the last picture gives her a different sense of emotion and character.  25 of these are getting made and will be sold in Australia later this year (I believe).  You can view work in progress pictures here on the AFB board, and view sinigang's website here.  He's got some other amazing Hulk and Superman pieces too.

Blackest Night is over

Boo hoo.  Well I got #8, so be warned, thar be spoilers ahead. arr...

So, this was all quite exciting.  Sinestro got chucked out of the White Corps.  All the resurrected heroes became White Lanterns and brought Black Hand back to life, then destroyed Nekron.  The Anti Monitor is alive again (that'll spell trouble), Maxwell Lord is alive again (and still mind controlling people, which will lead to even more trouble), Arthur and Mera got reunited (and I nearly cried but that's because I have the hangover blues today), and Kendra remembers all her past lives and fell into Carter's arms (won't that mean they are due to die again soon?).

Not everyone has been resurrected tho - Green Arrow, Ice and J'onn J'onzz are back, which is great.  Boomer isn't, which makes me sad.  I thought he was great as Kara's friend and his character had a lot of promise, especially when we look at what he went through in Blackest Night.  I would have really liked to see Gen (half of Firestorm) back but oh no she's still dead. Bah.

I'm happy that Osiris is back but where are Black Adam and Isis?  And of course Ralph and Sue aren't there.  Not that I am too bothered about them but lots of people, in the DCU and in the fanbase, do care about them.  Also, where are Garth and Dolphin?  I love Dolphin and didn't feel that we got enough of her when she was around.

I wonder how much the dead ex Black Lanterns remember of their time as corpses?  Not much I bet, judging by their reactions (which was very nicely done).  I would like to find out but as I won't be buying Brightest Day, the rest of you comics bloggers will just have to keep me up to date.

I'd also like to know what happens to Black Hand.  He's been taken away by the Indigo tribe, chained up and looks sort of mind controlled, which doesn't seem very compassionate, but then again maybe this is their way of being compassionate to the rest of the universe.  They've never been particularly friendly or supportive of other Lanterns/heroes so these actions of kidnap don't surprise me.

I reread all of Blackest Night this evening, just the main series mind, and came to the conclusion that it reads much better with all the tie ins.  The main story is like a brief overview of the events, and while it isn't neccessary to know what's happening in each spin off mini, you will get a deeper enjoyment if you read the tie ins.  Without the tie ins it seems rushed and brief.  It's also very dependent on having a good knowledge of the DCU and it's history.

What else can I say about this?  The fold out splash page thing made me feel like I was fourteen and reading Smash Hits!.  There's been some great action figures come out of this event.  If I had the money and space I would be buying:

Black Lantern Wonder Woman
Black Lantern Hawkman
Black Lantern Hawkgirl
Black Lantern Aquaman
Black Lantern Martian Manhunter
Indigo Ray Palmer
Red Lantern Mera
White Lantern Wonder Woman?  Do you think they'll do one?
But, that would double my action figure collection so is probably a no no.  Oh well.

Action figure wishlist

If I could have anything, I'd want:

Green Arrow in his Mike Grell unfiorm:

It's the sleeves and hood which make it so attractive to me.  That and the tunic style top.

Mia in her black uniform:

Mia is very very cool.

Big Barda:

Barda's on the left.  Now imagine she doesn't have her boobs out and that's what I want.  All teh Barda figures I have seen so far reduce to her to a sex object, aren't delicate enough, or aren't chunky enough, or are a combination of the 3.  I want her in full uniform, big and with character in her face.  is that too much to ask?

Grace Choi:

The tattooed 6 foot Amazon would be awesome.

Rose Wilson (Ravager):

I'd like her with a ponytail please.  She's not Rose without the ponytail.

Battle Armoured Wonder Woman:

I'd like pretty much that toy, except I'd like the helmet and wings to be removable.

Have you got anything on your wishlist?

Aquaman: Kingdom Come action figure review!

Oh yes, I succumbed.  The story goes thus.  I head into my friendly local comic book shop one wet Thursday.  I ask them about the possibility of getting a Black Lantern Wonder Woman.  They say they shall check for me.  I thank them and I leave.  As I go past the shop window I notice a very special looking toy.  It turns out to be kingliest Aquaman I ahve ever seen and I decide I must look at it closer.  I go back in the shop, I examine it and I decide I must buy it.

I go back to work in the afternoon, in a very good mood. I get home, take him out of the packaging and coo rather a lot.  The boyfriend thinks I'm a bit odd, but he indulges me.  Hark, hark at the pictures:

Let's get the good things out of the way first.  His face is fantastic. He looks old, he has personality in his features and the facial hair is detailed and has depth.  His head hair has streaks of grey in it, which to my mind look a bit odd but I understand it's a faithful representation of the comic art, so i'll let that slide.

The gold chain mail is done really well.  The gloves are detailed as is the sword belt.  The sea horse on his tunic has been painted really nicely and the gold bits are embossed.  The cloak and tunic flow just right and is slightly bendy.  In short, the clothes look like they would on a real human person.

Regarding the accessories, the sword is pretty big and works well positioned in his hand or in the sword belt.  I like the look of both it and the sword.

He also stands up easily and is stable.  That's kinda a rarity amongst my stuff.

All in all, this is a beautiful figure to look at.  He is only the second male figure I've got (ignoring the minimates), the first being Ares, so this should be an indication of how impressed I was with the figure in the shop.

Now I've got the good things covered, lets get to the bad things.

The articulation is fuck all.  Only one leg moves, which is useful to get him to stand up, only one arm moves at the shoulder (the sword bearing one), and there is no movement at all in the elbows waist and head/neck area.  The wrist of the sword bearing arm does swivel.   This isn't enough to make me dislike the figure, it's more of an annoyance.

The second complaint is that he can't hold the trident.  Try as I might, it will not slot into his fist, as there is not a big enough gap to squeeze it through the fingers.  This is a bigger complaint as not being able to accessorise with an accessory is kinda ridiculous.  So currently I have the trident on the shelf in front of him.  In the efforts of fairness I should point out that over at Action Figure Blues they have no difficulty with this and their figure can hold the trident.  I guess I've got a duff run.

All in all, I'm really happy with the figure and would recommend it to Aquaman fans, but beware of the trident!

If any of you are interested in viewing the rest of my collection you can see it all over at the Action Figure Blues forum.  And if you're even remotely interested in these kind of things then the AFB forum is a great resource for finding information and they've got some pretty shit hot customisers posting pictures of their work.

Ame-Comi Heroine Steel

Dear DC,

That is not an armoured costume.  She is mostly naked.  Also, Natasha Irons is not blond.

Yours in fury,

Ares!!! And Rings!

These two things make me one happy fangirl.

Back in August I entered the Action Figure Blues comment of the month contest, and won!  I was very very pleased and I selected the Adama figure, because I had been very much loving Battlestar Galatica, and I'd just watched the end of season 1 when August's prizes were announced.

Anyway, it turned out that release of the Adama figure was delayed..and delayed...and delayed.  So Mike (who sends the figures out) very kindly offered me a replacement, and I selected Ares.

I love it.  He's so, blue!  I'd been wanting to buy him for ages but couldn't quite allow myself.  I was intending this post to be a review, but it may turn into more a gush.

Let's see:

He has accessories!!  A sword AND an axe!  My first figure with accesories!  My first male figure at all actually.   He stands up pretty well too.

Another view:

The armour is quite detailed, and nicely done.  It looks solid, and protective, which is fairly suitable for a God of war.

I'm quite proud of this picture generally, but you guys can look at the brush on his helmet.  It's not flexible or actual brush, but that doesn's matter.

My favourite bits...check out the gloves.  He has skull motifs on them!  How cock rockingly hair metal fantastic is that!  And his knee protectors are also skulls.  (Knee protectors?  Shin pads? What would you call them?)  [EDIT: The boyfriend informs me they are called Greaves.  Not shin pads.  Greaves is from the old French for shin or shin armour.  According to wikipedia.  Don't say I never teach you anything.]

He looks pretty good with my Victoriana Diana too:

She's not taking any shit.

In conclusion I fucking love this figure, he is made of awesome.  Thanks Andy and Mike!

As I forgot to post the picture of my rings when I meant to, I shall include them here:

How cool am I, eh? eh?  Not very.  Anyway, I'm pleased with them. Anyone recognise the comic?  Leave the correct answer in the comments and you get a prize..

And cos this is a photo happy toy related post, I will also include a picture of my Star Wars model thing that the boyfriend got me a year or so ago for Christmas.  I had to put it together and it has a little man inside.  I'm crap at these things and have no patience so was quite pleased when I managed to put the thing together.

Someone once told me I have a creative, arty house.  I don't think arty was the correct word..

Wonder Woman Amazonia action figure review

This is my first attempt at an actual review of an action figure. Hope it’s ok.

A couple of weeks ago when I bought this stash of comics I was having a pretty rotten day (week) at work. Imagine my surprise when I headed down to the comic shop and found they’d got a batch of DC Elseworlds figures in. Not only that but they’d got the Wonder Woman Amazonia figure in! I have been after a Wondy figure for a really long time, and have rather liked this particular version. I failed to get the Ame-Comi one as it’s not available from retailers anymore, so when I saw this it took about a minute and a half of dithering before I succumbed.

Boy did this make my day. She’s absolutely wonderful. The costume is very much to my taste, it just looks brilliant. The designers have got the regality of Diana across and combined it with a Victorian influence very well. The muted colours work brilliantly for the story (highly recommended if you’re a Diana fan) and serve to set her apart from the canonical incarnation yet keep key elements of the costume – the eagle, the bracelets, the stars and the tiara.

In terms of the figure, the boots are really well done. Lots of folds and shading, little buttons and the heels have a shape to them – wide at the sole of the boot, getting thin, then widening again for the bottom.

The details on the bracelets are great – full forearm length with stars and triangle shapes etched in. The eagle on the corset is done in a similar style which makes it looks quite old and tarnished.

One of my favourite things about this is that the bodice is obviously designed as a bodice/corset. Her boobs are squashed at the top, which indicates that the body of the garment is stiff, which means it won’t fall down and her breasts won’t fall out in the heat of battle. Unlike say Arisia’s costume, or Star Sapphire’s, both of which must be held up with the power of the mind only. On second thoughts, that’s probably a bad example. Their outfits probably are held on by will power. Anyway, I reckon most comic fans will know what I mean. Unfortunately right now my mind has gone blank for other examples.

Back to Diana...The tail of the costume is a bit bendy, which is nice, even better is her hair, the pony tail of which is really flexible. I find that a really nice touch, even if I am concerned that it may come off… The main mass of hair is sculpted pretty well and is properly big. A lovely massive topknot culminating in a bun.

As for the body and face, she’s got leg muscles, which I approve of, and they’re not overly developed so there’s still a smoothness and grace to the figure. She’s got strong shoulder and clavicles. Her face is either sizing you up or confused, depending on the angle of the head. She doesn’t stand particularly well, I have to balance her by bending the right leg in order that she doesn’t topple over. Nothing new there then, none of my figures stand up particularly well.

Of the second hand ebay’d purchases, Linda Danvers is rather on the knackered side and Alex Ross’s Black Canary arrived with a broken knee joint so now has a toothpick contrived splint to keep her upright. As for the newly bought ones, All Star Batgirl is the exception, but I’ve just noticed she’s got rather big feet, which could be why. Nightwing and Flamebird need to be balanced rather carefully or they topple over. A lesson to DC in superhero anatomy maybe?

Anyway, this Amazonia Wondy is fantastic, I would highly recommend it. Especially for only nine point ninety nine of your English pounds.

Amongst the selection of Elseworlds figures on sale they also had the Flash, which I’m rather taken with. It’s an unusual version, seeing as how he’s got a pencil moustache, but the costume is gorgeous. The actual figure has lovely folds in the trousers legs and in the jacket and I’m really tempted to add it to the collection.

To finish, here's a pic of her doing a headstand:

I might have lied...

I might not be around too much over the next week as I have a job interview on Monday which will require a lot of work, as I've been asked to do a presentation *terrified* Public speaking is not my forte... On the other hand I managed to successfully sign in public on Tuesday. My sign choir did a half hour performance at the deaf awareness festival in the city on Tuesday, with people watching, and filming it, and I coped reasonably with that.

So, moving away from my impending terror, I do get to pick up two weeks worth of comics tomorrow, including the new Mercury Falling trade (yay Bart), Power Girl number 1, Supergirl and Comet, Flash rebirth (yay Bart!), FC Legion of 3 Worlds (more Bart!), amongst many others. And I should be able put in an order for the Wondy vinyl figure. *beams*

And I got a new CD in the post a few days ago - Ensiferum: Victory Songs -

Viking Metal. Sounds exactly like you'd expect. Which is awesome. Ok, so the lyrics are a bit lame, but the music is wonderful. I think I've got a Tyr CD coming soon as well. I think I prefer it when they are singing in a Scandinavian language and I just hear the sounds of the vocals.

I'm back and ready to post again

Finally it feels like all the big social engagements of the year are over. OK, I have a few other weekends away planned but all the big, regular events feel like they they're over.

My sister's wedding was great, it was a beautiful sunny day and apart from her taxi turning up half an hour late everything went swimmingly. This just meant that the groom sweated a bit longer, which I believe is traditional. She walked down the aisle to Be my Baby from Dirty dancing and had her first dance to In Your Arms by Bon Jovi. My sister is soft. The venue was awesome - a castle in fact, with spectacular views to the sea. My dad did a lovely speech and the groom did the traditional embarrassing speech, my mum cried as did several other women folk there. I however didn't, being a bridesmaid I was far too nervous and terrified I'd somehow fuck it all up so felt disengaged for the first part of the day. I now feel really proud of my sister, she organised a fantastic day and everyone loved it. Now you'll just have to put up with a few photos:
The venue itself:

View from the venue to the coast:

Isn't Kent countryside lush? Just avoid the towns.

My bouquet:

Pretty pretty pretty! Unfortunately I had to leave the flowers at my dad's as they wouldn't survive the 5 hour train journey back home.

My sister also gave all the bridesmaid gifts, the others got vouchers for use at a body pampering place, but for me she got me something slightly different. Knowing I'm not too girly but not knowing exactly my taste in comics, she got me a voucher from the local comics shop, Abstract Sprocket. the shop doesn't even DO vouchers! She rang them up, explained the wedding and needing a gift thing, and asked what they could do. What I've got is a letter from one of the staff saying it's to the value of #30 for spending on whatever. This means the shop is even more awesome than I thought, and that my sister is triply awesome because she's thought about what I like and gone to the effort to get me something special. Which means a hell of a lot.

So I thought I'd see if I could get this Wonder Woman statue:

Battled armoured up and very kick ass! Has anyone got it? Is it good in the flesh? I love the tiara protecting her cheeks, her boots, the shield, the shoulder protectors and the sword. In fact all of it. I wish it were poseable, but that's not the end of the world.

Aside from attending weddings and after wedding parties I have also been doing a lot of reading.

I got through 4 volumes of Preacher and got a lot of mileage out of the word 'wanker'. I think Jesse is a bit of a prick himself, the way he treats Tulip, but overall he is still pretty charming. Tulip is much more endearing on the second reading.

I read the Who Is Superwoman finale in Supergirl. Man that was not who I expected. very interesting, I shall await with bated breath to find out why she donned the suit and how she got the powers.

I missed Free Comic Book day, which is a pain, but I guess I can find scans online. Bit gutted about not getting the Green Lantern issue.

The previous week, before the wedding, I read Marvel's Secret Invasion trade, I believe collected from a webcomic, and thought that it would probably be a pretty good introduction to comics and the Marvel universe for someone who had never read any marvel before. A decent stand alone story.

The Hawkman: Endless Flight trade was also good. I'm looking forward to sitting down and reading the Hawkman/girl ongoing. Notable memories are a discussion about burgers and both Carter and Kendra nutting the bad guys in the face and introducing their knee to a villain's nose.

Batman: Fortunate Son is shit. Avoid like the plague. Bruce comes across like the biggest (and stupidest) knob in the world.

Batman: Death and the Maidens however, is pretty compelling. Ra's Al Ghul enlists Batmans' help to access the last Lazarus pit and in so doing Bats get to meet his mother and then his father again. Their reactions and attitudes were not what I expected. Is this story arc in continuity? If so did we see any ramifications from this meeting?

Moving away from superheroes I also read The Last Tempation, written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Michael Zulli. based on the Alice Cooper concept album, also plotted and written (in part) by Neil Gaiman. Definitely recommended. Delicious and creepy. I reckon this would also make a good introduction to comics for new readers.

And moving to the pure written word, I'm getting through George R R Martin's Dream Workers, volume 2. Mr Martin is evidently a cat person (read the Haviland Tuf stories) , which gives him points, but more to the point the stories from the Wild Cards books are pretty intriguing. Anyone read the Wild Cards comics? His Twilight Zone screen plays looked very promising, if a little obvious.

I will be picking up last week's comics this Friday, along with this week's stuff, thereafter I expect to be broke.
