Look, here's a great post of the vast majority of skirt, bag, dress, shoe etc styles:
http://fullofwhoa.tumblr.com/post/107079509098/dixiejos-right-here-is-it-everything-you-ever
There's a few styles missing, but the vast majority are there.  It looks useful for when I want to start making clothes.

Alternate universe Harry Potter where Aunt Petunia takes him in and loves him:

It's beautiful and gut wrenching and well worth reading.

A North Korean defector's view on The Interview:

Really interesting.

A really, really good dahl recipe:

Seriously good.  Seriously seriously good.  The recipes on this woman's site are great - always tasty and simply to do (at least I've chosen the simple to do ones - I leave the complicated ones!)

Wonder Woman Wednesday (link time)

I won't post an image today, but just go look at this link: http://geektyrant.com/news/wonder-woman-best-of-cosplay-collection

So many beautiful Wondy cosplays.  I mean beautiful in terms of the physical attributes of the women, the costumes, the poses, the attitude of the women, their stances and the quality of the photographers.  Mesmerising.

Very cheap comics bundle available on Comixology - 1 day left

I crossposted this from my other blog.. New readers... start here! - introducing people to comics.  I thought readers of this site would like to know about it too.

Comixology have just announced a sale on their Submit comics.  These are creator owned comics (not published or owned by Marvel, DC, Image or any other big companies) that creators submit to the site for sale to the general public.

There are 100 comics in this bundle, including some by Joshua Hale Falkov and Becky Cloonan.  The individual comics are normally priced at $333 but the sale price is $10 for the lot.  This is unbelievably good value.

Buy the bundle here.  The sale ends March 10th, 11pm EST.

Note - these are for digital comics to be read on your laptop/phone/tablet etc.

Radio Bamf podcasts

I haven't done a plug for radion Bamf recently, so thought I should do one now.  I'm one of the hosts (I believe that's the right term!) and it's a weekly podcast about comics.  We cover the news and what we've read, occasionally do trivia and take questions.  Give us a listen, go on!

Details of the last few shows as follows (I think I have the topics right):
Episode 38: Happy New Year - http://wearearcade.com/?p=14032.  In this we covered what we got over the holidays, the something terrible kickstarter, forever evil, larfleeze and chew.

Episode 39: http://waabamf.podomatic.com/entry/2014-01-18T02_28_10-08_00. I rave about Sterling Gates' Vibe and Blue is the Warmest Colour.  We all discuss Sex Criminals (IIRC we talk mainly about porn in the woods and the letters pages).  News covered is Alan Moore and Peter Parker's return.

Episode 40: http://wearearcade.com/?p=14036.  This is a full house, with all 4 hosts there! I think I talked about Forever Evil: Rogues and Dan Slott's She-Hulk.  I may have talked Supergirl and I think we all discussed Hawkeye.  We also talked about the British Library's upcoming comics exhibition.

Episode 41: Breaking news - http://waabamf.podomatic.com/entry/2014-01-29T11_53_38-08_00.  All the news happened this week.  DC's solicits including Aquaman and the others, Teen Titans, the return of Wally West, Lex Luthor joins the Justice League and DC's tv shows/films. Marvel news was a  Spider-man weekly, Nightcrawler, Avengers Assembled, Marvel's film and TV news and Quicksilver's crappy movie costume.
Episode 42: Horror special - http://waabamf.podomatic.com/entry/2014-02-05T09_25_13-08_00 Special guest P M Buchan joins us to talk horror.  News is the Spidey and Bats/Supes movie, Earth 2 Batman ID is revealed.  This was the most recent one recorded on 3rd Feb.

Have a listen and enjoy!

Three things of merit

One is this article in the Guardian, an open letter to Michael Gove, our hated Education Secretary, questioning Gove’s statements and policies regarding schools.  It’s well worth reading.

This is a photo of cats waiting for fishermen to return:

Lastly, this bit of amazing news – Seeking the next Jane Foster!  http://www.themarysue.com/marvel-natalie-portman-girls-in-stem-contest/  I'll just copy the article here:
------------------------
Marvel has announced the Ultimate Mentor Adventure, part mentor program, part contest, that gives American girls in grades 9-12 the resources to find and interview professional women in science, technology, engineering, and math, and then rewards them for doing it.
Natalie Portman has always been a consistent voice for greater screentime and opportunities behind the scenes for female characters and real women in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it doesn’t surprise me at all to learn that she’s the first face you see on the Ultimate Mentor Adventure’s explanatory video. Portman talks about her character Jane Foster, an astrophysicist, amid finished and behind the scenes clips of Jane in Thor: The Dark World, and, while the bombastic music of the trailers plays, she says, “the truth is, I really do love science. And the role gave me an amazing opportunity to explore science in all its possibilities.”
That’s what the contest appears set up to do. With the resources on the page, eligible girls (they must be at least fourteen, in grades 9-12, and live in the continental U.S.) can find a woman working in a STEM job that they find interesting in their area, and also get tips on how to interview and introduce themselves. In order to be eligible for the big prize, however, entrants must submit a unedited five minute video in which they talk about their love of science, their experience interviewing their mentor, and what steps they might take to embark on a STEM career.
That big prize? A trip to Los Angeles, California, to a screening of Thor: The Dark World at the El Capitan theater on opening day, a screening where the winning videos will run as part of a documentary short before the movie. It’s hard for me to express how cool of a contest this is. Not only is it taking one of the oft diminished characters in superhero film (the love interest) and emphasizing that her talents are useful and achievable in the real world, it’s also structured in such a way that even girls who don’t win are given resources to follow their interests, and motivation to find out a bit more about their career opportunities.
Four for you, Marvel Entertainment and Natalie Portman, and I do hope that documentary short makes it onto a DVD release!
------------------
Recognising and celebrating a female character’s achievements? Check.  Relating this to women in the real world? Check.  Providing resources, opportunity and incentive for teenage women to get involved in STEM technologies? Check.  Doing something to even out real gender disparity in these sectors? Check.

This is a wonderful, brilliant idea and Marvel and Natalie Portman should be widely applauded for instigating it.  It’s made my day.

Skull faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaccce

Guys, guys, guys check out this amazing facepaint/makeup done by my friend Elizabeth Matisz:

How good is that?  She even did it herself on her own face!  I know when I looked at it I assumed she was doing Silver Banshee makeup, but as she's not a comic fan, it's not.  Anyway, I think it's wonderful and I just wanted to share.

Elizabeth also does a lot of really rather good photography, a lot of which are self portraits.  You can see them at her flickr page.  I really like this starry one, this mournful one, this couply one, this happy one, and this other happy one,

She's also on twitter @LillybetM.

Stuff that's been swimming around my brain for a while

I have come across tons of cool stuff lately so I'm going to dump them all in this blogpost.   Enjoy.

This video is my friend interpreting Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody into British Sign Language.  If you like, performances, Queen or BSL do yourself a favour and watch this.

Here's a story about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, which went into the Jaws movie.

Here's a graphic showing the sign language family tree.  It's not entirely up to date, Auslan (Australian  Sign Language isn't on there, for example) but it's a good start and probably useful for folk who don't know much about how sign languages develop.

Sci-fi women rock:

I'll end with a few turtle themed pictures:

Podcasts!!!

I took part in a podcast on Sunday.  Naturally, it’s a comics podcast.  It’s called Radio Bamf and it’s now online at the following places:

We are arcade website - http://wearearcade.com/?p=12029

(My episode is episode 13)

We talk about Thanos, Batman, Supergirl, Princeless, Wonder Woman, Age of Ultron, comic news from last week and good amalgams.  And probably more too.  I have no idea how I came across in this, I refuse to listen back to my own voice.  When I’m put in a public role I suffer from chronic under-confidence  after the event, so to my mind I did terrible and ruined it.  But that is not based in any reality, that’s just my brain telling me I’m an idiot (thanks brain).  I do know the other guys are entertaining and fer sure they know their stuff so go give it a listen, for them.

Give ’em a like/follow, whichever floats your boat.  Becky Cloonan is on it next week (episode 14) so you should def listen in for her!  The show is recorded every Sunday and published every Monday.

Thank you to the Bamf guys for inviting me, I had great fun :)

Propellor's The Taming of the Shrew

I wrote a review of this play and submitted it to The F Word and it got published.  If you'd like to read it please do so :)

I sort of wish I'd had something to say about Propellor being an all male company, and what implications that has on the play and the performance, if any at all, and what the political ramifications are.  But I don't know enough about the theatre to write anything meaningful.  Ah well.

I started a tumblr

Mostly because I want an easy quick way to reblog images that I like.

I have come to a decision about how I will use each of my blogs (and twitter).

This blog (Pai) is for informal comics review, essays, ramblings, whinges, celebrations and anything that needs more than three sentences of words.

New readers...start here! shall continue as a formal comics blog for people new to comics.  And I am going to update it more often too.  Honest.

My tumblr, Pai tumbls, is located at http://sarangacomics.tumblr.com/.  That will be used for reblogging photos, most likely to be of Supergirl and a Wonder Woman, but quiite possibly will cover other heroes too.  I really wanted to do a fuck yeah Supergirl tumblr but don't want to give myself another project, and anyway, there already is one (http://fuckyeahsupergirl.tumblr.com/).

Twitter (@sarangacomics)  is for general chit chat and finding out news.

Link time!

Several things I've seen that I want to pass on -
Landry Walker and Eric Jones talk about the delays on Danger Club - the delays came about because two of the colorist's kids got hit by a car while our cycling recently.  Obviously, this struck a nerve with me.  Motorists - drive more carefully will you?  And cyclists?  Wear helmets, please.

Comic booked redesigns the DCU - a twitter friend of mine has started redesigning the DCU, for fun.  That link will take you to his Wonder Woman redraw.  I really like it.  Incidentally, this is the same guy that drew me this piece of art, which is now hanging on my wall.

An article on how racism works in the comics industry - it's not as simple as one person yelling racial slurs.

Gendercrunching in the comics industry - Comics creators broken down by gender and race.  I'd really like to see similar stats for the staff at Marvel and DC - the editors and publishers and administrators and suchlike.  I'd also like to see how it's broken down by staffing level.

How not to write comics criticism - and if you don't read comics but are interested in them, have a gander and you'll probably learn more about the medium.

Why I'm not going to pick up the Amyethst book, despite the preview looking all kind of awesome.  Seriously writers, stop with the rape tropes.

I got interviewed!

Megan of the Women Write About Comics blog interviewed me, as part of her series on women's comic bloggers.

You can read it here.  I talk about Supergirl, and signing, and LGBT characters, and comics for new readers and other stuff.

Thank you Megan for interviewing me, it was a pleasure!

If Black Women Were White Women

I found this on tumblr recently and I found it a really really interesting read.  I can't get to the original post so I'll give you the tumblr link where I read it.
-----------------------
In “If Men Could Menstruate,” Gloria Steinem makes the persuasive argument that “Whatever a ‘superior’ group has will be used to justify its superiority, and whatever an ‘inferior’ group has will be used to justify its plight.”

For too long the definition of racism has been a fight between white and black manhood or “who’s the bigger man”, so to speak. We’ve trivialized the existence of gender between both groups of men in favor for discussion of the “bigger issue”.

This has historically enabled white female supremacy—the most unchallenged form of white supremacy—to escape any critical thought.

What if suddenly, instantly, the power of white femininity were transferred to black women?

The answer is clear: Black women would represent value, purity; and based on their natural traits would be worthy of protection and instantly become the objects of universal desire. White women would represent the opposite.

“Beauty tar potion” would become globally popular to get the “black look.” “Dove” would be replaced with a black soap called “Raven” to help exfoliate the skin and bring out subtle hints of melanin.

White female features would be declared violent. Their “jagged” thin lips, “knife sharp” noses, and “harsh” jaw lines would be nature’s way of expressing why men have a natural preference for the soft features of black women. Soft lips, soft cheekbones, and soft, round noses would be proof of natural femininity. Full, pink lips and large, dark eyes would become associated with virginal black girls whose purity must not be compromised. Black female features would thus be said to represent youth.

Straight, blond hair would be considered “wild and unruly” because when the wind blew, it did not stay in place. Women with naturally straight hair would hide their “unruly” and “wild” stick-straight hair in public. The desire for “lightweight hair” that defied gravity would permanently end the use of blow dryers. Keeping one’s natural blond hair wild and straight would become indicative of a political statement.

The anti-aging properties of black female skin combined with soft, curvy bodies would be proof of the overall reproductive health of black women. Scientists would argue that black women were naturally preferred as long term mates and mothers because they were “healthier.” Men’s attraction to women is based on overall health and fertility, after all.

Suddenly, biracial women would be “in” because the hard features of white women wouldn’t prevent the fragile genes of “black beauty” from peeking through. Men would suddenly have the desire to date “ethnic,” non-black women since they would look “closer to black” than blond women—at least they wouldn’t look like white women.

Statistics would equate the fact that white women make up the majority with their “overpowering” and “strong” population. This would be proof that they could handle unsafe neighborhoods. The “strong culture” they would have created amongst themselves would enable them to withstand their lack of protection from predators and criminals. Statisticians would argue that men were attracted to black women innately because they made up a small percentage of the population. “We tend to value what is rare,” they might say.

Men would proclaim that white women deserve sexual objectification because “flat buttocks” allow for deeper penetration. In ghettos across America, men would stand on street corners and yell “Damn! You got a flat ass!” to remind white women of their sexual status in society.

Upper class women would be afraid that their “asses looked flat” since it would represent animalistic and sexual deviance, like white women. Black women’s buttocks, said to protrude farther from the body, would prove that their natural vulnerability made them “less equipped” to handle hardcore sex and rape like white women could.

“I need a strong white woman!” would become a popular “empowering” slogan for exploitative men who rationalized the emotional, financial, and sexual overburdening of white women.

Overweight white nannies would become the “acceptable white women” in popular culture as they do not pose a threat to black female superiority and privilege. Conventionally attractive white women would serve as a sexual threat to black women for single-handedly breaking down the beauty hierarchy.

Hip hop videos would feature men throwing money at “white bitches” bent over in front of the camera to showcase their white asses, eager for deep penetration. Entire songs would be devoted to hatred of “white gold digging bitches” who believed that they were entitled to the financial security in marriage to which black women were entitled. “Penetrable white asses” and “pale-faced hoes” would become the cash commodity for selling entire musical genres.

White women’s “hard” bodies would be deemed more “capable” of fighting off sexual attackers, while the soft curves of black female bodies would become worthy of police protection. White women, despite being at high risk of being victimized by violence and sexual crimes, would not “need” police protection.

Movies would feature black women as the main objects of men’s desire across racial lines while stereotypes of evil, bitter, and oversexed white women would further prove why men of all races simply did not prefer blonds. “We can’t help those to whom we’re attracted,” men would say. “Preference” would become an unconcealed acceptance of discrimination against white women. White women’s anger towards and sadness about the status quo would show their unreasonable jealousy of the innate superiority of black women.

Republicans would ban abortions to protect the virtue of pure, black motherhood and liberals would advocate increasing the number of abortion clinics in “low income” neighborhoods where white women would be the majority. Liberals would claim that white women had “culturally” approved of sexual objectification and were “safe enough” without outside help since they were warned not to touch “in-group issues” with a ten foot pole.

And so on and so forth.

The most important reality is that black feminists would eventually grow tired of being seen as innocent and vulnerable in patriarchy and would fight to erase the commodity of black femininity. “The innocent, submissive, and vulnerable representation of women is what puts us in danger. The rigid category of femininity has contributed to our oppression,” they might argue.

In the back of every black feminist movement we would hear the quiet and dignified pleas of radical white feminists. “But, we do not represent femininity. We are considered strong, incapable of feeling pain, and sexually deviant—but all this has done is increase our likelihood of being in danger. And aren’t we women too?”

As Gloria Steinem wrote, “In short, the characteristics of the powerful, whatever they may be, are thought to be better than the characteristics of the powerless - and logic has nothing to do with it.”

What remains universally evident is that the many justifications for power and privilege are always inherent, always scientific, and always permeate society to the point that they remain deeply buried within our collective consciousness.

Until someone challenges them.

New Eschergirls tumblr!

The wonderful Ami Angelwings has started a tumblr, titled Eschergirls, showcasing crap comic art. Actually the tagline is: 'Float like a butterfly, sting like a WTF!?  This is a blog for female characters in impossible or ridiculous poses because the artsist need to show teh sexy'

It's highly amusing.   Here are some fetaured pictures, but bear in mind that as with most tumblrs the brilliance is in the commentary:

Not around much

Blogging is likely to come to a complete slowdown over the next few months.  I've started my BSL level 3  course in London, with Remark!, I've attended one weekend so far and have a few more to go.  It was great, really great, but I've got a lot of work to do inbetween classes.  So, I have set up a youtube channel, and I intend to upload videos of myself signing, dunno what about yet, I suspect comics will come into it somewhere.  Hopefully this will give me the confidence to sign in front of a camera and also provide me with a way to self evaluate and improve my skills.

Anyway, for the next few months or so I reckon I'll be concentrating on that and New readers... more than on Pai.  If you're interested in the channel, or if you know BSL and would like to leave me comments, the channel is here.  I think that's the right link - the channel is called sarangabsl.

I've read Justice League #1, and loved it, my review is on New readers....  I have yet to read the other number ones as I haven't picked them up yet.  Will do so Friday or Saturday.

What does everyone else think of the new DCnU titles?  What are the good ones what are the bad ones?  Leave reccs and warnings in the comments please!

Oh, and I'm particularly keen on comixology!  I downloaded JL from it before getting my hardcopy and it's easy to use and cheap.  Awesomesauce.

You def won;t hear from me over the next week though, as I'll be on holdiay in France :D

GCSE in British Sign Language?

Signature, the accrediting body for all British Sign Language, Deaf Awareness, Communication Support Worker, Lipseapking, Notetaking etc courses, are developing a GCSE in British Sign Language.  they would like to seek evidence of support and demand for the course, and are asking people to show support by going here.

For non UK people, GCSE's are the exams you take at 16.  After 16 you can leave education, but if you choose to continue studying you can take A-Levels (at 18) and then go to university.

Obviously, I support the creation of more BSL courses, so long as they taught to a high standard and native BSL users are involved in the programmes.  If you support the creation of a GSCE in BSL please go visit the page and leave a message.
