Forever Evil/Villain's Month round up

Spoilers ahead for:
Sexy Lobo, Killer Frost, Zod, Count Vertigo, Darkseid, Black Manta,  Riddler, Mr Freeze and Forever Evil #1.

Forever Evil #1: Surprisingly strong.  Earth 3 guys seem more characterised than pre new 52 era, which is nice.  I can't believe they've unmasked Dick b/c surely that will lead to Bruce being outed?  I really hope Kord industries leads to the return of Ted.  Moving the moon to block out the sun is ridiculous and old Supergirl comics have dealt with the physical problems this will cause.  Stupid.  But overall it feels like a reasonable story and I'm getting the rest.

Cyborg Superman: Much better than I was expecting. Much much better.  I like Allura's headdress but I don't like that they are spelling her name differently (it used to be Alura).  I loved Kara's scenes.  Still not too keen on Cyborg Superman as a concept but I prefer this version to the old version and I want to see how it pans out.  With Tony Bedard writing future Supergirl issues I'll keep with the hardcopy format of this book.

Darkseid: Loved this.  Loved seeing Darkseid's backstory and the history of the New Gods.  Highly, highly recommended.

Black Manta: Rubbish rehash of Forever Evil 1.  Felt rather forced.  But, I like hos these villain's issues are veering between origin stories and setting up for Forever Evil by giving the villains a way to move against the Crime Syndicate.  I didn't expect this sort of unfolding of the tale and it is making it feel different to Final Crisis.

Riddler: Only bought this because I wanted one 3D cover to remind me of the debacle of this month's cover design choices and the shop only had this and Zod left.  The comic itself wasn't bad.  They are making Nygma a serious villain.  of course he's been a serious villain before.  It depends how he's writen.  The 3D cover is shockingly horrible though.

Count Vertigo - Bought on a whim and it turned out to be very good.  This is my first encounter with the character, pre or post 52.  I think I'll get GA more regularly now.

Lobo: Well this is the shocker of the bunch.  I really enjoyed it.  Really really enjoyed it.  It's new suave sexy Lobo.  The first shot we get of him is a full page scene where he's reclining on a bar with a glass of wine in his hand.  Then he murders a dude, cuts him in half, takes him to claim the bounty, gets another job and shows no mercy to poor aliens being trafficked for their rare bones.  This issue was fricking awesome and I want more.

Zod:  Ooh this was also good!  I do like origin stories.  Especially when they have lovely, rich, varied flora and fauna like Krypton has.  Zod is a nasty fucker isn't he?  The colourist did a fab job in this.  Utterly fab.

Mr Freeze:  I can't quite work out if Victor still has his dead/frozen wife backstory or not.  It's all a bit confused - possibly because I don;t read any other Bat titles.  Nice art though.  Nicely laid out.

Killer Frost: This was written by Sterling Gates so I was looking forward to it.  I like this incarnation.  I liked the fire versus ice scenes.  I feel like I'm missing some backstory because I haven't been reading any other titles with her in, but I did very much like this.

If you are looking for Villains months titles to buy so far I would recommend Sexy Lobo, Killer Frost, Zod, Count Vertigo, Darkseid and Forever Evil #1.

  1. Some of these haven't been half bad, which considering what I was expecting, is...pretty good! I too liked Killer Frost, and I ended up picking up Count Vertigo because a lot of people said it was a good read.

But the whole blocking the sun with the moon thing just drove me nuts. It would only work for a little while anyway, because of their respective orbits...but hey...comic book science!
