I watched it. I liked it. I got the impression that it was panned, but I don't get why. OK, comic fans might hate it cos it doesn't follow canon, but as a film it works ok. It's a good bit of fluff for a Sunday afternoon.
Hugh Jackman makes a good (hot) Wolverine. I was pretty surprised by Scott Summers not being ridiculously annoying, and actually displaying some balls (not literally). Emma Frost was also pretty good. Gambit was annoying and rather moody, but I expected that. Deadpool was barely in it, but I was gratified to see that Ryan Reynolds wasn't playing Hal for Deadpool. It was a good superhero movie. Lots of powers, lots of fight scenes, lots of angsty romantic bits and basically pretty much all I want from a superhero movie. Still, I was a bit puzzled to see Ma and Pa Kent turn up halfway through.. Did Stan Lee get a cameo in this one? I didn't notice.
Now tell me, is this movie still canon in the X-Men franchise and if so, how does that X-Men First Class movie fit into movie canon?
Spot on! I like to look at the movies as separate from the comics. I think more fans should do it!
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see First Class :(
Hmmmm....I don't remember if Stan was in it...
Me and my wife just watched this a few weeks ago, and agree with absolutely everything you say here. Especially the bit about the Kents.
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly, I had heard so much bad about the film that my expectations were absurdly low.
I actually enjoyed this too, except Gambit. I really don't get why people didn't like it but then sometimes people can be a bit precious about comic stuff.
ReplyDeleteWhen you say the Kents do you mean the man and woman on the farm who took him in and gave him the jacket? They were the Hudsons and I assume they were based on characters of the same name, Vindicator and Guardian from Alpha Flight, since they helped out Wolverine in the comics before he was an X-Man (that's my dorky quota for the week filled, I think!)
Also I don't remember seeing Stan Lee either. Maybe he's doing 'Where's Wally' style cameos now. And I think X-Men First Class is only kind of canon - I prefer not to think about it because trying to understand it makes my brain melt.
Hi Eyz: yes I do mean the Hudson. As a DC fan (and not being really familiar with Marvel) they seemed eerily similar to the Kents! I guess the mid western older farming couple salt of the earth type is quite popular huh??
ReplyDeleteI was catching your "Kent" joke but I SO did not get that they were the Hudsons!!! Were they mentioned by name (it has been a while since I saw the flick)?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if it was mentioned in the movie that they were the Hudsons. It must have been otherwise I wouldn't have known. All the cool kids have a wholesome farm background these days, not just reporters in nerdy glasses. I always new the Kents were trendsetters!
