The truth is I sent in that letter TWO YEARS ago, got a snippy, short response from Scott, and have stopped keeping up with the comic. I don't know if the body type diversity has increased since last I read it, but if the cover issue of Willow naked is any indication, I'm guessing it hasn't. I believe that Jeanty thinks that he is trying, and his illustrations probably aren't as bad as others, but he is probably desensitized to it and can't see it from a teenage girl's perspective. And did it really take them two years to come up with something to say?morgiepoohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07175023305034736550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23471698.post-67637593797182954432010-01-05T09:38:27.620+00:002010-01-05T09:38:27.620+00:00"It could be worse" is *never* a good de..."It could be worse" is *never* a good defense. Because I haven't seen any in Jeanty issues.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23471698.post-24679336098508672192010-01-02T18:55:50.315+00:002010-01-02T18:55:50.315+00:00Great post. Jeantty's response seems along the lines of 'I'm not the most sexist artist out there, so you have no right to criticise me, besides I'm also less racist than some others so give me a cookie.'

You're absolutely right that he speaks from privilege. He has made some small concessions and seems offended and angry that more is asked of him.

I do love Buffy. But it's laced with stereotypes and beliefs so ingrained that they are hard to verbalise. Prejudice/privilege/isms are like an onion. The most egregious (the first layer) are much less prevalent than they were, though really not gone. Often the sexism we're trying to draw attention to is in the second layer - more subtle, more covert, much less understood.

I think that's where the comments about lack of diversity in body shape are coming from - and are spot on. Buffy and Faith are both tiny - if different. Where are the tall slayers, the muscular slayers, the heavy slayers? I don't think 'peak physical condition' looks the same as 'current ideal of feminine beauty'.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06016788597877262340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23471698.post-36940563877833705462010-01-02T18:23:19.724+00:002010-01-02T18:23:19.724+00:00This is a very informative blog.
